Species composition and distribution of birds in three universities of southern China |

Abstract: |
Urbanization is one of the major drivers of global land use change and has a profound impact on the composition and distribution of urban biodiversity. The university campus is an important part of the city and is a hotspots for bird distribution. This study aimed to assess the avian diversity within three university campus, Guangxi Eco-Engineering Vocational and Technical College, Jiangxi Environmental Engineering Vocational College, and Yunnan Forestry Technological College. We were used point count method to conduct bird surveys in the three universities from August 2020 to December 2023, and compared the bird species diversity, functional diversity and phylogenetic diversity among them. The surveys documented a total of 195 bird species across 24 orders and 19 families, including 21 species under national key protection. Jiangxi Environmental Engineering Vocational College recorded the highest number of species with 113 (15 orders and 43 families), followed by Yunnan Forestry Technological College with 94 species (12 orders and 38 families), and Guangxi Eco-Engineering Vocational and Technical College with 90 species (13 orders and 38 families). The avian community was predominantly composed of resident birds, insectivorous birds, and canopy-nesting species, and exhibiting variations in functional and phylogenetic diversity. Stochastic processes may predominantly influence the assembly mechanism of campus bird communities. The study reveals that university campuses are not only repositories of substantial bird diversity but also play a critical role in the conservation of urban biodiversity. It emphasizes the significance of university campuses in bird conservation efforts and contributes valuable scientific insights into the formulation of conservation strategies, the advancement of educational study, and the enhancement of public awareness on biodiversity in university campuses. |
